Cryptanalysis (from the Greek κρυπτός kryptós, "hidden", and ἀνάλυσις analusis, "to loosen" or "to untie") is the art and science of analyzing ciphers (or cyphers) (i.e. algorithms for performing encryption or decryption), ciphertext (i.e. encrypted text), or cryptosystems (cryptographic security systems, secret code systems) with the aim of finding weaknesses in them that will permit retrieval of the plaintext from the ciphertext, without necessarily knowing the key or the cipher (algorithm). This is known as breaking the cipher, ciphertext, or cryptosystem.
