The arithmetic mean or average of a finite sequence of real numbers having terms is the sum of all the terms divided by . For example, the arithmetic mean of the first ten positive integers is 5.5 (since 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 10 = 55).

The concept of balanced primes (A006562) depends on the arithmetic mean: given a prime , if , then it is a balanced prime (such as 5, which is the arithmetic mean of 3 and 7).
